DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — It’s winter in Illinois and for drivers it means potholes. Those annoying holes in the road can rip up shocks and tires. Like cities across the Midwest, filling those potholes is a daily job from now through late spring.

“It’s definitely a lot harder to work in the winter cold,” Ray Lambert of Decatur Public Works told WAND News as city employees were busy patching streets in Decatur on Friday. “The materials, issues with trucks freezing up, stuff like that. It’s definitely more challenging in the winter.”
Each truck the city has working to fill potholes has 2 workers. They shovel a “cold patch” into the holes. It’s a temporary solution until the weather gets warmer near summer.
WAND News found a huge pair of potholes on East Eldorado Street across from a truck entrance at Primient. One of the holes measured about 60 inches long and 2 to 3 inches deep. Drivers who came up on the holes quickly had a hard time avoiding them.
