HERRICK, Ill. (WAND) — A rural fire department is expanding ways to serve the community after receiving a major donation.

Herrick Fire Department receives 20,000 dollar donation

The Shelby Electric Cooperative presented the Herrick Fire Department with a check for $20,000 to open a warming center for the town. The co-op also donated a new generator to power the fire station in case of an emergency power outage.

"This is going to enable us to have heat in the building so the trucks don't freeze, and it's going to take all the hazards away from power outages during storms, which is a lot of times when we get called out to things" said Fire Chief Paul Adams.

Any money left over after the warming center is opened will be used for new equipment and updated radio communication gear.

Kevin Bernson, the Vice President of Media and Public Relations at Shelby Electric Co-op said, "The co-op is all about community support. That's one of our core principles. And this is just a small way for us to give back to the communities we serve."
