DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A new outdoor basketball court for local kids to enjoy was officially unveiled during a ribbon-cutting Monday at Old King’s Orchard Community Center in Decatur. Â
The court gives kids in the neighborhood something to do while keeping them busy and off the streets.Â
OKO Executive Director Devon Joyner said the closest basketball court to OKO's neighborhood is over a mile away, so the new court is an opportunity for nearby kids.Â
"We talk about the issues our children have—not having much to do, not having a lot of outlets—so they get into other things. And so my thoughts right now are, we give them something to look forward to. With time, the community will get back to them and they have a good time," Joyner said.
"It's uplifting, it doesn't dilapidate it, and that's the goal, just to give this area something to be proud of. OKO has been a part of this area for a long time, and we want to be proud of our area and we want the people who live here to be proud as well," Joyner continued.Â
