SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A Springfield man being held for a 2022 double homicide has received new charges after assaulting a corrections officer.

According to the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, 25-year-old Mark N. Crites assaulted a Sangamon County corrections officer during routine cell checks on November 11, 2023.

Crites pushed his way into a stairwell the officer was using to move to another cell block. He then grabbed the officer by the neck. The officer then radioed for help and began kicking Crites who eventually gave up and re-entered his cell block.

The officer did not receive injuries during the struggle.

Crites is being held for an arson as well as the shooting deaths of Gloria and John Norgaard in their Springfield home. The couple was found dead on Sept. 11, 2022. Autopsy findings showed that both Norgaards died from gunshot wounds. Crites was arrested the next day.

A grand jury indicted him on 13 counts including first degree murder, theft, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and arson. If convicted of all charges, Crites faces a sentence of mandatory life in prison.
