SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A plan to recognize gambling disorders and educate the public on gambling addictions passed unanimously out of the Senate on a 55-0 vote.

The bill comes as some lawmakers worry over the dangers gambling addicts can have to themselves and their families. It would be run through the Department of Human Services, which could give money to support gambling prevention programs.

"This bill amends the substance abuse disorder act to codify gambling disorders as a recognized disorder and it will enable DHS to provide and coordinate gambling disorder prevention, treatment and recovery services," State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) said.

With the proposal passing the Senate, it now heads to the House floor, where lawmakers could talk about it in the coming weeks.
