SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A plan heading to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk could require health insurance companies to cover up to a six-month supply of prescription hormone therapy.
Sponsors said too many people face unnecessary barriers when they try to stay on a treatment plan that supports their health and well-being.
The bill calls for coverage of the six-month supply of medication and any necessary supplies for self-administration when approved by a healthcare provider.
"For me and millions of others managing conditions ranging from thyroid disorders to severe reproductive health issues, hormonal treatment is a standard necessary medical care," said Sen. Lakesia Collins (D-Chicago).
This change would apply to Medicaid, private and state employee insurance plans.
House Bill 5492 passed out of the Senate on a 38-19 vote. It received a 75-39 vote in the House.Â
