SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill heading to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk could establish forever chemical sampling and reporting requirements for water control permits, sludges and biosolids.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency notes PFAS have become widespread in air, water, soil and consumer products. 

This plan would require the state to only issue permits to water treatment facilities if they periodically sample for forever chemicals.

"This process is federally mandated by the Clean Water Act, but it's administered by the state," said Rep. Laura Faver Dias (D-Grayslake). "This bill would fill informational gaps by codifying a testing procedure for PFAS levels in wastewater, giving Illinois important information about these PFAS chemicals."

Senate Bill 3917 passed out of the House on a 64-34 vote Friday. The measure previously gained unanimous support in the Senate.
