SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — An Illinois House Democrat plan could force more venues to add baby changing tables to their restrooms.
The bill would make all hotels, public and private schools, movie theaters, small entertainment venues like bowling alleys, healthcare facilities and public parks with restrooms install a baby changing station.
Illinois father Kyle Comstock, holding his son, testified in front of the House Public Health Committee and told them that many family friendly venues do not have baby changing tables.
"I don't know how you can call a restaurant 'family friendly' and not have a changing table," Comstock said. "You're really putting me in a weird situation there. Do you want me sitting on the table next to me while I'm changing my son? That doesn't sound appetizing to me."
Republican lawmakers on the committee voted against the bill, saying private companies will be forced to pay the installation cost. The proposal passed the committee on a partisan 5-3 vote. It now heads to the House floor for further debate.
