SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A bill sent to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk Friday could expand youth civic engagement in honor of Rev. Jesse Jackson.

The plan ensures all high schools offer students of voting age the opportunity to register during the school day in a safe, accessible and nonpartisan environment.

Sen. Robert Peters (D-Chicago) said this bill can help even more young people be prepared to vote.

"The reverend cared deeply about making sure young people had both a diploma and a voter registration card," Peters said. "I am just grateful and honored to carry a bill dedicated to the reverend and his legacy."

Yet, Republicans argue the Illinois State Board of Elections already provides voter registration information to schools. They said the plan will only duplicate current state law.

House Bill 4339 passed out of the Senate on a 41-12 vote. The proposal received a 77-24 vote in the House.

"It sends a message to every graduating senior in Illinois that you're not just prepared to leave school, you're prepared to participate, lead and shape the future of this state," said Rep. Kimberly Du Buclet (D-Chicago).
