DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Heat, humidity, no breeze. Yes, we are at the front door of summer and it’s not going to end for a while. Temperatures will be around the 90s for much of the next week. It’s time to be careful with our health.

“People over the age of 65 particularly may be more vulnerable,” said Dr. Brad Uren, MD at the University of Michigan Health. “There’s also people taking medications. Things for heart failure, for kidney disease. Even some behavioral medications.”

Initially, heat related illness can start off with simple symptoms like a rash, bumpy red itchy skin and cramps. But those symptoms can advance to a more serious condition like heat stroke.

“You should contact 911. You should take steps to begin cooling the patient as soon as possible with whatever means you have available with air conditioning or cool water and if you don’t get medical care for the person quickly it can progress to become life threatening,” Dr. Uren stated.
