SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Senator Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois, warns the ongoing trade war will raise prices on American families.
“Let me tell you,” Durbin said in Springfield this week. “That trade war that he (Trump) has initiated in the United States is going to be devastating to the state of Illinois.”
Sen. Durbin went on to say the President can only implement tariffs in an emergency. Durbin says there is no emergency and it is up to Congress to decide whether tariffs are needed.
Canada is one of the states biggest trade partners. President trump has hit that nation with a 25% tariff on most goods.
“We don’t have an emergency situation with Canada. For God sake it is one of our most important trading partners and now we’re having a trade war with Canada. Is that the message of the last Presidential campaign,” Durbin said.
