URBANA, Ill. (WAND) — Police said a crash that happened just after 8:00 a.m. on November 16 has left the driver, who they say caused a collision by driving erratically and speeding, in the hospital with critical injuries.

Urbana Police said the crash involving two vehicles happened at the intersection of Cunningham Avenue and Perkins Road. Their preliminary investigation indicates that one of the vehicles, a blue Chevrolet truck, was driving erratically and speeding northbound on Cunningham Avenue. The truck then collided with a gold Ford Explorer that was turning east onto Perkins Road. The driver of the Explorer had the right of way.

They add the driver of the Chevrolet, 21-year-old William Daniel Melendez-Scott of Champaign, also struck a light pole and was ejected from the truck. Melendez-Scott was issued a citation for a DUI and disobeying a traffic control signal. He remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. The other driver was released from hospital care.

UPD is asking nearby businesses for video footage of the crash. They said the investigation is ongoing. The Champaign County Sheriff's Office accident reconstruction team members also assisted the UPD.
