URBANA, Ill. (WAND)- The Urbana Police Chief said he is investigating the flow of guns into the city.

On Monday night the Chief reported that total violent crime is up just 1% this year.

Shots fired and shootings are up slightly from this time last year.

Chief Larry Boone says his staff is focused on tracking gun data. He is concerned that neighboring states with weaker gun laws may be selling firearms that end up in the hands of criminals.

Chief Boone said," I suspect that's how a lot of the guns are getting into the wrong hands. But what you have to do, once you establish that, and what institutions that are providing those guns- you have to get ATF to take a look at them."

The Chief says he plans to use data to prove where exactly these guns are coming from and cut them off at the source.
