BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WAND) - The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board has called a special meeting to discuss moving up the football start date for the 2026 season.

The IHSA Board would ask the Legislative Commission to consider moving the football practice start date from Aug. 10 to Aug. 5.

According to the IHSA, the Legislative Commission will meet Jan. 27 to discuss the change, and if approved, member schools can cast one vote starting Jan. 29.

Voting will end Feb. 12 and will go into effect this August if it receives a "simple majority" of support from member schools.

In December, the IHSA approved a playoff expansion of 48 teams per class, which will take effect during the 2026 campaign.
