CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Illinois men's basketball's 90-92 overtime loss to Wisconsin concluded a stretch of 11 games over the course of 33 days.
After being handed back-to-back losses for the first time this season following a 12-game win streak, the Illini faced a hurdle in their health. While the team had performed above expectation without Kylan Boswell, missing Andrej Stojakovic against the Badgers due to an ankle injury proved costly.
The rotation of players, which typically includes the use of 7 to 8 players, was instead dropped to 5 to 6 among those who have seen consistent minutes.
Boswell and Stojakovic are said to be game-time decisions as the Illini prepare for Indiana. Head Coach Brad Underwood is facing the reality of a situation where the team must continue to operate without two would-be starters.
"We put Brandon [Lee] in the other night," Underwood says. "We thought, you know, there were some things he could help us with, and then they don't guard it. That just clogs the paint and for Keaton, we can't have that."
Underwood added the coaching staff considered including Mihailo Petrovic in the rotation against Wisconsin. While the international target was labeled a key pickup for the Illini, the Serbian has appeared in 14 games and logged just 98 minutes of action.
"Mihailo does some different things and, you know, looking back... might have played him, might not have," Underwood added. "I like what we did. It's a game-to-game situation for those guys and how teams guard them and what we need. [We] probably need Mihailo if 'Bam' [Boswell] doesn't go."
Illinois' matchup with the Hoosiers comes at a critical point in the season as teams prime themselves for a late push in hopes of securing better seeding in conference tournaments and the NCAA Tournament. Sunday's battle with Indiana kicks off a stretch of four-consecutive Quad 1 games for the Illini (Indiana, USC, UCLA, #2 Michigan).
Last season, the Illini recorded their largest road win in the program's history with IU, winning 94-69 in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Illinois has won six out of the last nine meetings with the Hoosiers. Tip-off from the State Farm Center is set for noon on Sunday.
