DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - With several more tornadoes hitting Illinois on Sunday, the state's count for 2025 will rank amongst the highest over the last 75 years, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.Â
Prior to Sunday, the state's tornado total for the year was 128. At least four tornadoes have been confirmed across Illinois with damage surveys still in progress. The total is likely to increase.Â

Regardless of the final total, the 130+ tornadoes will rank no worse than fifth highest since 1950, according to data.Â
The National Weather Service in Lincoln counted 49 tornadoes across central Illinois, with at least four more expected to be added to the total after damage surveys following severe weather on Sunday.Â
Typically, according to NWS, central Illinois sees 20 to 25 tornadoes annually on average.Â
In central Illinois, tornadoes hit several counties in mid-March -- causing damage in Shelby, Moultrie, Cumberland, Coles, Champaign, and Edgar counties. One EF-2 tornado caused damage to a school in Neoga.Â
In June, several twisters hit central Illinois including an EF-2 in Jacksonville that caused significant damage to a youth sports park.Â
Last year, NOAA reported 176 tornadoes, the most going back 75 years. Here's a look at the top five years with the most tornadoes since 1950:
- 2024: 176
- 2023: 145
- 2006: 144
- 2003: 136
- 2025: 133*
