DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Everyone knows that it always feels hotter in direct sunlight, but by how much?
We put this to the test around 3:00 Sunday afternoon, as temperatures ramped up into the mid 90s.
The temperature that it feels like is not only dependent on if you are standing in the sun or the shade, but also the surface that you are standing on.
In the grass, the feels-like temperature was 89° in the shade, but in direct sunlight it was closer to 100°.
Unsurprisingly, the difference was much more drastic when standing on blacktop, with a difference of nearly 30°.
None of this comes as a surprise, but what it does show is a quick an easy way to find some relief from the scorching heat we will continue to see across central Illinois this week.
