5 Things to do this weekend

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The first weekend of the new year is upon us, and there are plenty of things to do and see across Central Illinois.

Here is a selection of events, markets, concerts and more happening Friday, Jan. 2, to Sunday, Jan. 4. 

New Year's Dance Party

Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to party the night away as we get into the new year during the Springfield Park District's New Year's Dance Party. This is a free event for everyone, regardless of skill, so no pressure to get dance lessons ahead of time. 

The Springfield Park District said that semi-formal attire is encouraged, and food and drinks will be provided. 

When: Friday, Jan. 2, 7-9 p.m.

Where: Erin's Pavilion, 4965 S. 2nd St., Springfield

Freeze Fest

The Illinois State Museum will host its super cool Freeze Fest on Saturday. Attendees can launch snowballs, explore the Northern Lights, enjoy hot chocolate and more. This event is free to the public.

When: Saturday, Jan. 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Where: Illinois State Museum, Springfield

Crafter's Paradise 2026

It's a Crafter's Paradise! Crafters will be provided a banquet table on a first-come, first-served basis. A freebie table will be available to attendees. No food or drink will be provided, but there will be a fridge, microwave, oven and stove on-site. 

When: Saturday, Jan. 3, and Sunday, Jan. 4, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: Mt. Zion Convention Center, 1400 Mt. Zion Parkway

Board Game Demo Days

Ever wanted to learn how to play that board game you've had your eye on before buying it? Now you can this Saturday at The Scratching Post CU cat and board game cafe in Champaign.

When: Saturday, Jan. 3, 2-10 p.m.

Where: The Scratching Post CU, 114 E. University Ave., Champaign

Cosmic Bowling

Bowl under the black lights with glowing lanes during Cosmic Bowling at Logan Lanes in Lincoln on Saturday. Enjoy a night under the disco lights with family and friends as you aim to strike up a win.
