CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — The Champaign Police Department is honoring Officer Christopher Oberheim five years after he was killed in the line of duty.

In a social media post shared Monday, the department reflected on Oberheim’s dedication to both his family and the community he served. Officials said his death had a lasting impact on people across multiple communities throughout central Illinois.

“His duty was to serve. Ours is to remember,” the department wrote, alongside the hashtags #703 and #CPDRemembers.

Police said that in the years following Oberheim’s death, the department has continued supporting fellow officers, strengthening relationships within the community, and carrying on his legacy of service and dedication.

Officer Oberheim was killed on May 19, 2021, while responding to a call in Champaign. His death prompted an outpouring of support from law enforcement agencies and residents across the state.

Community members and fellow officers continue to remember Oberheim for his commitment to protecting and serving others.
