MAROA, Ill. (WAND) — A Maroa family is expressing heartfelt gratitude after an overwhelming show of support from the community following their son’s recent leukemia diagnosis.
Family members say the encouragement, prayers, and kindness shown toward young Matthew Clary have lifted their spirits during an unimaginably difficult time.
Matthew, who is a sophomore at Maroa-Forsyth High School, serves as the school's mascot "Chuck."
"Matthew's heart is always full of Trojan Pride and Matthew puts a lot of time, thought, and effort into being our mascot 'Chuck,'" the school said in a Facebook post. "Nothing makes Matthew happier than being 'Chuck' and bringing a smile to a young Trojans fan at a football game!"
Matthew’s mother, Charity Mefford, shared a message with the community, thanking everyone who has reached out as her son begins treatment.
“I want to let you know how grateful Matthew, Michael, and I are for the outpouring of support, kindness, and compassion that you have shown us,” Mefford said. “Matthew's leukemia diagnosis has been devastating to us. He is a strong young man and fighter. He is always happy and singing. We know we have some dark days ahead, but the prayer and support from everyone has been overwhelming and powerful — we can feel it. We are so grateful for everything.”
She also asked the community to continue keeping Matthew in their thoughts and prayers as he continues his battle.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Mefford added.
The Maroa community has rallied around the family with messages of support, fundraisers, and offers of help as Matthew begins the next phase of his leukemia treatment.
