SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Lincoln Library is going on a tour across Springfield with its new bookmobile. The bookmobile is a library on wheels, making books, audiobooks and WiFi hotspots more accessible to the community.Â
"What we're hoping for is that this is an opportunity for the library to meet people exactly where they are. We know that there's a variety of reasons that people find it hard to get downtown," said Lana Shovlin, the Lincoln Library's public relations manager. Â
The bookmobile has been in the works for the past few years. Shovlin said Director Gwen Harrison really pushed for it, and the outreach team has been dedicated to introducing the bookmobile to the community. The library on wheels serves all 10 city wards. Â
"Make sure that you're following us on social media for sure, because if there's any cancellation [for] a reason that we would be at a stop, which might be weather issues, mechanical issues, traffic issues. While we do have the schedules posted at Lincoln Library, we will post cancellations, most likely on social media," Shovlin said. Â
The bookmobile aims to bring the community together through books and connection. Even people who have library fees can get their accounts wiped clean for a fresh start and get the opportunity to experience the fun. Â
"And we have all sorts of wonderful programs available at the library that connects people to each other. We have book clubs that are available. Now we've launched a new teen book club, it's called 'Teen Books & Boba.' We're encouraging kids to come to the library. It's a really safe space," Shovlin said. Â
