DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Legal help hits the road.
Land of Lincoln Legal Aid has officially launched its Mobile Justice Clinics. There are two fully equipped offices on wheels designed to bring free civil legal services directly to communities across Central and Southern Illinois.
The initiative kicked off with a launch celebration on Oct. 20. The vans traveled to all 65 counties in the organization's service area.
Michele Davis, Managing Attorney for Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, said the project extends decades of legal service into a new format.
"Land of Lincoln has been in the community for over 50 years," Davis said. "We service 65 counties, and what we are doing is bringing an extension to those services—by taking them directly to the communities."
The goal is to meet people where they are. The Mobile Justice Clinics aim to remove barriers that prevent people, especially low-income individuals, seniors and veterans, from accessing free legal assistance.
Each van contains two law offices and dedicated staff attorneys ready to help people apply for services on-site.
"There are a lot of barriers to justice, and we do not want geography or transportation to be one of those," Davis said. "Although we have regional offices, sometimes people still can't reach us. We want to be in the community—not just in times of crisis, but also during moments of community building."
The clinic can help answer questions about housing and eviction prevention, family law, access to healthcare and benefits, financial stability and criminal record expungement or sealing.
