PAWNEE, Ill. (WAND)- For more than 20 years, Midwest Mission has been sending supplies across the United States and the globe after natural disasters. Their location in Pawnee includes a large warehouse, stocked with supplies to respond when a crisis occurs.Â
On Friday, they packed a semi-truck full of supplies to send to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa hit the country. The truck includes a variety of items requested by organizations already on the ground in the country.Â
"We're hoping to send about 100 mattresses on every single shipment, and then with those mattresses, we need the twin sheets and the pillowcases that go with those," said Chantel Corrie, Executive Director of Midwest Mission. "We're going to be sending cleaning supplies that go in a five gallon bucket that are easy to hand out."Â
In total, the group plans to send 4 truckloads of supplies. In the next load, they've been asked to provide bicycles, walkers, wheelchairs and similar medical equipment.Â
While they accept donations of items like this, the organization has a lot of connections, which help them purchase necessary items significantly cheaper than a normal person can.Â
"When you're buying one, you pay $10," said Corrie. "But when we're buying 10,000, we can usually pay $2.50. So for every dollar donated to Midwest Mission, we send out $4 of in-kind supplies to the disaster that is being affected."Â
For a list of the donation items you can drop off, ways to purchase products online, or to donate money, visit the Midwest Mission website.Â
