MAROA, Ill. (WAND) — Drivers traveling through Maroa on Route 51 will notice a change in speed limits starting Tuesday.
According to Maroa Police Chief Fitzgerald, the Illinois Department of Transportation began replacing speed limit signs along Route 51, lowering the speed limit from 55 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour.
IDOT crews expect the work to be completed Tuesday afternoon.
Chief Fitzgerald emphasized that the decision was made solely by the state, noting that the City of Maroa and its police department were not involved in the decision-making process and were not notified in advance, as Route 51 is a state-maintained roadway.
While the speed limit change may be welcomed by some and questioned by others, the police department views the adjustment as a step toward improving safety along the busy corridor. Chief Fitzgerald said officers have observed and cited drivers for excessively high speeds and dangerous driving behaviors on Route 51 in the past.
The department’s long-term hope is for additional safety measures, including stoplights at Washington Street and Wood Street. Until then, officials say the reduced speed limit is a move in the right direction to help prevent serious crashes.
Chief Fitzgerald urged all drivers to slow down, drive courteously, and remember that fellow motorists may be friends, neighbors, or loved ones.
