SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The City of Springfield’s Office of Public Works is inviting residents to wrap up the fall season in a fun and eco-friendly way at the 5th Annual Pumpkin Smash.
The event will take place on Saturday, November 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Lake Springfield Beach House.
The family-friendly event encourages residents to dispose of their pumpkins responsibly by composting instead of sending them to the landfill. Visitors can smash their old jack-o’-lanterns and enjoy a day filled with fall activities.
The event also supports the Central Illinois Foodbank with a food drive running from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Organizers encourage attendees to bring nonperishable food donations to help local families in need.
Additional activities include free document shredding from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., food trucks, a Touch-a-Truck display, and free reusable bags for the first 100 guests.
City officials say the Pumpkin Smash is a fun way to celebrate sustainability while giving back to the community.
