SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Normally, a gathering of hackers may draw suspicion. But at the Top Hat Hackers Hackathon, it was business as usual.
Hackers descended on the University of Illinois Springfield's College of Health, Science and Technology to compete for top prizes. College students and recent graduates from Illinois collaborated to solve real-world challenges using technology.
"The goal is they work in these teams and they really begin to see how what they're learning in the classroom can be used to for real world problems for populations that maybe many aren't thinking about or aren't thinking about how technology can be the solution," said Travis Bland, interim dean of the College of Health, Science and Technology.
Teams of three to four participants worked throughout the day to develop innovative, tech-driven solutions aimed at improving inclusion and raising awareness of neurodivergent needs in professional settings.
Judges evaluated projects based on design and technical approach, with the first-place team receiving a $1,000 cash prize. Top performers may also be considered for internships with Krasan Consulting Services.
Bland says that he wants students to walk away knowing they can make a difference in the world.
