DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — After filing a permit application in June of this year, Wolf Carbon Solutions has withdrawn its application to build a CO2 sequestration project with plans to reapply next year.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has been considering whether to allow the company to build a carbon dioxide pipeline through central Illinois. The planned pipeline would stretch across DeWitt, Henry, Logan, Macon, Peoria, Rock Island, Stark, and Tazewell counties.

The liquefied CO2 would be injected underground at ADM in Decatur.

Dean Ferguson, president of Wolf Carbon Solutions U.S., released this statement:

“Wolf understands and respects the stringent regulatory review process for this project, and we appreciate the diligence of the ICC and its staff. We have made the decision to withdraw our current application, with the intent to refile in early 2024, to address the questions and concerns raised by ICC staff in their recommendation. This voluntary action does not impact our commitment to the project and its stakeholders, or the ongoing regulatory processes, including with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) and Army Corps of Engineers.

“Wolf remains committed to the Mt. Simon Hub. This project will be built using the latest technology and union construction to ensure its safe and efficient operation. We have already received significant support for this project – from labor, business leaders, landowners, and local officials, among others – all of whom understand the economic and environmental benefits this project will bring to their communities and states.”

ADM executives spoke to city council earlier this year regarding the safety of the project.

"ADM's been operating this site for over a decade and has safely stored millions of tons over one mile below the ground of its own company operations," Chris Cuddy, Senior Vice President of ADM, explained.

Dissenting voices questioned the speed of the project.

"I think its unreasonable to rush to a decision about whether to allow such storage under our city," Judith Parrish added.

The decision comes on the heels of the canceled CO2 pipeline project from Navigator Heartland Greenway LLC in October.
