CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The first six months of 2025 have been the most deadly on the roads in over 20 years in Champaign County.
In response to the spike in deaths, the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission is releasing a survey for residents to provide feedback on dangerous areas they see daily.
"We've had pedestrians, bicyclists [and] motorists in at least 12 of the 15 fatalities; they've been preventable crashes. It was human error or human action,"Â said Susan Ebert, RPC's Planning Manager.
Ebert says available data does not show a pattern or reason for the jump in motorist deaths, which is where the public can help connect the dots.
"We want unique experiences of people who have been in crashes or even if they haven't, places where people have traveled that have proven to be some place where improvements could be made," Ebert told WAND News.
The survey asks questions about what they believe are the factors contributing to traffic injuries and deaths, and how likely they are to get a ticket for committing a traffic violation.
"We also want to gather through the survey perceptions people have because that will help us determine how much we need to focus on education for our residents and not just maybe redesign things," Ebert said.Â
The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete, and can be found here.
