Ameren Super Fund site in Taylorville, Illinois

TAYLORVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — A non-for-profit group made up mostly of Taylorville residents has been collecting samples for air, water and soil testing near a toxic site next to a public park.

My Community, My Family is concerned that a former gas manufacturing site, used to provide gas for heating homes and businesses in the late 1800s and early 1900s, might be responsible for heavy metals found in some samples. In the 1980s and 90s the site was found to be responsible for cases of neuroblastoma in children in Taylorville. Owned previously by Central Illinois Public Service (CIPS) the site is now the responsibility of Ameren.

Initial testing results have increased concerns among the group with additional results coming in the next few weeks.

Ameren told WAND recently its tests in the area around the site show are the company has met drinking water standards around the site. Illinois EPA indicated in November there has been no leakage of contamination off the site.

Much of Manner’s Park in Taylorville has been closed off until future test results are received.
