Race Chapman & Angela Powell

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A Decatur man has entered a plea deal after two dogs were found dead at his home in May.

Race Chapman, 24, was arrested along with Angela Powell, 28, on May 29, when Decatur police found two dead dogs in the house that died from traumatic neck injuries.

The dogs, Thor and Butterball, were left on their leash for an extended period and later died as a result, according to a sworn statement of their arrest.

The suspects told DPD that the dogs were killed during "a break-in," but officers cited evidence that they had been living in rough conditions for some time.

Chapman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty, while two other charges were dropped.

He was sentenced to a year of court supervision and was ordered not to care for any animal during that time.
