DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — A Decatur man facing an attempted murder charge for an October shooting made his first court appearance on Monday.

According to court records, 28-year-old Anthony Dickey Jr. was arraigned on several charges, including attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.

The man police said Dickey shot was 25-year-old Marcelo Montiel, who was also arrested on several charges including possession of a weapon by a felon.

According to a sworn statement, Decatur police responded to an apartment complex in the 1400 block of East Wellington Way for reports of a shooting on October 19.

When they arrived, officers found multiple shell casings outside the complex, according to the sworn statement.

Police spoke with a woman who told officers she was in a relationship with Montiel. She told police he'd been shot and was on his way to the hospital.

The woman let police search her apartment, where they found blood and a loaded gun with bullets matching some of the casings found outside.

Officers said they were told Montiel arrived at the hospital. During an interview, Montiel told police he was approached by Dickey, who had a gun.

Montiel said Dickey shot at him first, and he returned fire. The sworn statement said Montiel did not have a valid FOID card.

He was arrested the day of the shooting and denied pre-trial release. He pleaded not guilty and is due back in court for a pre-trial hearing Thursday.

Dickey is due back in court on February 18.
