MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — A man arrested in connection with a deadly crash into a Mattoon nursing home on Friday had his first appearance in Coles County court.

Curtis A. Meadows, 54, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated DUI after police said he drove a Nissan Pathfinder into the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home, killing an 82-year-old woman and critically injuring an 86-year-old woman.
Police said Meadows told an officer that he had consumed cannabis around two hours before driving. Meadows is facing four counts of aggravated DUI causing death and two counts of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle.
In court Tuesday, Meadows said he planned to hire private counsel.
Judge Brien J. O’Brien determined that Meadows presented enough of a threat to the community to deny him pretrial release. He's due back in court Monday, May 12 for a preliminary hearing.
Editor's note: In court, Coles County State's Attorney Jesse Danley stated that the critically injured 86-year-old woman had died. He contacted WAND News to make a correction that she was still alive and in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.
