(WAND) - Two deputies were injured last Thursday while arresting a man and woman from Milford, Illinois on drug charges.

According to the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office, police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in rural Sheldon at approximately 9:37 p.m. on March 13. The car was driven by 49-year-old Suzett K. Fassoth, who had failed to use a turn signal.

Deputies approached the vehicle and made contact with Fassoth, as well as a front seat passenger, who was identified as Terry L. Gardner, 58.

Deputies conducted a lawful search of the vehicle and discovered what was suspected to be cocaine along with various pieces of drug paraphernalia under Gardner's seat.

As deputies attempted to arrest Gardner, he actively resisted and fought with them. At one point, Gardner tried to gain control of a deputy's taser, but was unsuccessful. Eventually, Gardner was successfully placed in handcuffs.

Both deputies sustained injuries during the altercation.

According to the police, Gardner was taken to the Iroquois County Jail. There, he physically fought with corrections staff, refused to be photographed or fingerprinted, and also declined to change into a jail uniform when requested by the staff.

Gardner was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer and attempting to disarm a peace officer.

He was detained pending a pretrial hearing but, due to the SAFE-T Act, was mandated to be released with a scheduled court date.

Fassoth was taken into custody without incident.

She was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was later released with a notice to appear.
