IROQUOIS, Ill. (WAND) - A 57-year-old woman was shot and killed in Iroquois, Monday night according to the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office.

Police said a vehicle driven by Nicholas Gregory, 38, of Milford, Illinois was left parked on a railroad crossing located at 2150 N. 2750 E., just outside Iroquois.

Gregory allegedly stole a vehicle from a nearby driveway and then parked it on the railroad tracks next to the vehicle he left there earlier.

Angela Taylor, 57, of Donovan, was stopped in her vehicle in front of the truck, which was blocking the railroad crossing.

Police said that Gregory exited the stolen vehicle and approached Taylor's car. When Taylor stepped out to see what Gregory was doing, he fired his pistol, hitting her.

Gregory then fled the scene in the truck he parked on the railroad tracks.

Taylor was pronounced deceased at St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee.

After fleeing the scene, Gregory arrived at a residence in Watseka, Illinois. He had a brief interaction with the resident before driving away while shouting that he was going to kill the resident. At that time, the Watseka Police Department began assisting in the search for him.

Gregory was located in Jasper County, Indiana. A pursuit followed that involved both the Jasper County and Newton County Sheriff's Departments. He was taken into custody by deputies from the Newton County Sheriff's Department and later extradited to the Iroquois County Jail.

Gregory has been charged with first-degree murder, and the investigation is ongoing.

This is still a developing story.
