DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – D.A.R.E. was a popular anti-drug program in schools in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, but the program eventually disappeared.
Now, after nearly 20 years, a D.A.R.E. pilot program has returned to Decatur, with the help of the Decatur Police Department.
The old program focused on drugs and drug abuse. The pilot program at Johns Hill Magnet School is using a new approach.
The program, taught by School Resource Officer Dreu Larson, now focuses on decision-making, risks, consequences and making choices critical to issues faced by kids today. Those include drugs, teen suicide, nicotine, vaping and social media safety.
On Tuesday, fifth graders at Johns Hill graduated from the program. In the fall, it's hoped that D.A.R.E. will be expanded to other Decatur Public Schools.
