CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - Champaign police say 14-year-old Elijah Booker was found shot on Hedge Road and later died in the hospital from his injury.
Now they're trying to figure out what exactly happened that led to him getting shot. Because of that, taking a walk around the neighborhood hasn't been the same for William Sanchez.Â
"14 years old is pretty young," Sanchez said. "So, if a 14-year-old is getting killed, imagine a 21-year-old like me. You think I'm gonna get popped so easily?"Â
Sanchez mention how one of his friends was shot and killed near where Booker was. It is another reason why he said he doesn't stroll around the neighborhood as much.Â
"When is it going to stop?" Sanchez asked aloud.Â
Booker was a student at Franklin Middle School. Dr. Susan Zola, Champaign's Unit 4 superintendent, said it is important that the community will grieve together and support each other.Â
Dr. Zola said she learned how much of good student Booker was from his peers.Â
"[Booker had a] positive spirit and kind of a fun-loving attitude about life," Dr. Zola said. "A lot of individuals (were) wanting to be part of his friend group."Â
The superintendent said Booker's classmates are working hard to honor him by sharing their best memories and recording words of encouragement to his mother.Â
Champaign police said the shooting is an on-going investigation. WAND News expects to learn more information in the days to come.Â
