SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The best and brightest in the agriculture industry were on display during Agriculture Day at the Illinois State Fair.

Friday, kids from all over the state participated in the 4-H Expo.

There is everything from horticulture to baking.

"We're very excited about that because we celebrate food and agriculture in the state," said Germán Bollero, Professor, Dean at the University of Illinois College of Aces.

The three-day event in the Orr Building showcases more than 3,000 projects from all across the state. It also shines a spotlight on the next generation.

"Welcoming over 3,000 projects of youth to the space, which is so amazing to have that opportunity. Because what we see is that the youth exhibiting these projects are actually finding new ways for their careers, and it's helping them be ready for work and for life," said Kevin Carey, Illinois 4-H Interim Assistant Dean and Director.

The University of Illinois Extension team up with 4-H to show off the best and brightest in the state during the annual expo.

"It is a wonderful way for young people to hone their skills, to grow their skills, with their skills, meet new friends, and really, again, prepare themselves for school and work in life," said Durriyyah Kemp, University of Illinois Extension Interim Associate Dean.

Participants shared with the judges what it took to do their project, whether it was stained glass making or preserving foods.

"It's just really just an amazing opportunity for them to get to showcase their mastery and how outstanding all of their different projects are, and how much work and effort has gone into these projects," Kemp said.

Not only is the expo a way to show off their work. It is also a way for kids to build connections.

"It's a great way for them to feel like they belong to something, and really see the value in the work that they've done leading up to this and feeling successful and feeling valued, and proud of the work that they do," said Kemp.

The 4-H Expo will continue through the weekend with several participants from other parts of the state taking part.
