CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The City of Champaign is considering a new blueprint plan to better manage its homeless population.
Champaign's point-in-time survey shows the city saw a 159% increase in homelessness from 2022-25.
Now the city hopes to develop a system to stop people from losing their homes and put safety nets in place so there is always a safe bed available for anyone without a home.
"Being able to provide advocacy and legal services and also education about tenant rights. We know there is a gap, and when people have information and have an advocate and understand their legal rights, they have an opportunity to access and maintain housing," said Equity and Engagement Director Rachel Joy.
The homelessness prevention blueprint team is recommending hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional funds to prevent people from losing their homes.
The team hopes to start implementing their plan this summer.
