SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield City Council approved a plan Tuesday to take control of Robin Roberts Stadium and sell it to the Friends of Robin Roberts for a dollar.

The nonprofit promises major investment in the field where the Lucky Horseshoes play, including a $1 million turf installation project.

Additionally, the group will offer low-cost baseball and softball clinics for city kids.

"There's a plan in place for that to become the jewel of the city, as we like to think it has been and was. And because of the action the city council took tonight, we promise that we'll make Robin Roberts Stadium something that the city of Springfield will be proud of," said Jim Ruppert from Friends of Robin Roberts Stadium.

The field will also host the inaugural season of the Women's Pro Baseball League, beginning in August 2026.
