(WAND) — The Illinois Commerce Commission is offering energy efficiency tips to help beat the heat this summer.
With temperatures on the rise, the ICC has put together a list of recommendations to help keep cool while saving on energy bills.
"Dangerously high heat and humidity is expected to continue across Illinois over the holiday weekend, and we have several weeks of summer remaining," ICC Chairman Doug Scott said. "We want Illinoisans to stay cool and safe, without putting themselves at financial risk of being unable to afford their electric bills."
Tips for keeping homes and businesses cool while lowering the energy impact of peak summertime electric rates include:
- Contacting your utility about programs to reduce energy usage during peak hours.
- Installing a programmable thermostat to control the temperature overnight.
- Scheduling regular AC maintenance visits and replacing filters regularly.
- Closing curtains and other window treatments to block the sun.
- Using ceiling or box fans to keep cool.
- Caulking or adding weather strips around doors and windows to seal any leaks.
