URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - In June 2025, OSF HealthCare announced it would combine Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana and OSF HealthCare Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville into one hospital with two campuses.

The transition is still in progress, but it kicked into gear on Jan. 1.

"Since the beginning of the year, we've been working to expand the Urbana campus for behavioral health services," said the president of the new combined hospital, JT Barnhart. "We had a lot of needs, a lot of demand for healthcare in Vermilion County, so it felt like the resources we had in Champaign-Urbana would be better suited for Danville."

Things like general surgery, orthopedic surgery and pulmonary care moved east to Danville. OSF is also investing $8 million to improve labor and delivery care at the Danville campus. The ICU is getting ready to reopen as well.

"We have a 12-bed ICU on campus," Barnhart said. "With moving some of our critical care providers from Champaign to the Danville market, we're able to revamp that service and keep patients local in Vermilion County."

The Urbana campus is being transformed into a behavioral health center with a $13 million investment.

"Patients are traveling hours sometimes, whether it be for outpatient, which we're expanding all our outpatient service or acute care inpatient services. We feel that being able to add more beds with different service levels, different treatment plans is going to help drastically improve the service in the area," Barnhart said.

Two new floors are expected to be completed by August. When finished, there will be 65 beds for behavioral patients across different ages and needs.

The Urbana campus does still have a full-service, operational emergency room.

Barnhart said OSF offered jobs at one of the campuses to about 85% of its employees affected by the changes. He said about 60% of those employees agreed to stay with OSF.
