URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - OSF HealthCare plans to eliminate several services at its Urbana-based Heart of Mary Medical Center, including open-heart surgery, pediatrics, and cardiac catheterization, as part of a strategy to consolidate operations into one hospital with two campuses (OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center).

This restructuring is aimed for January 2026 and will reduce the number of medical/surgical beds from 110 to 25 and close the surgery department with 15 operating rooms.

OSF cited financial losses exceeding $361 million since acquiring the hospital in 2017, low utilization rates, and challenges in recruiting specialty physicians as reasons for the discontinuation of these services.

A recent 71-page document filed on Monday provided additional details that were not disclosed earlier last month when OSF announced its plans to operate its Danville and Urbana locations as a single licensed hospital.

The Urbana hospital's market share has significantly declined, prompting the company to shift certain services to Danville and Bloomington.

While acute mental illness services, an emergency department, and other outpatient supports will continue in Urbana, OSF considered closing the hospital entirely but decided to maintain it due to community needs. The specific plans for the vacated space remain undetermined.
