Salvation Army Men's Shelter

Salvation Army Men's Shelter. January 22, 2026.

Decatur, Ill (WAND) – A Decatur shelter for homeless men is expanding its capacity as temperatures are predicted to nose dive this weekend.

The Salvation Army men’s shelter has a normal capacity of 30 to house people overnight. It’s been near that number with 28-30 men nightly since January 1st.

With the cold weather moving in, the Salvation Army is implementing its cold cot program, bringing capacity up to 50. Each person will have a place to sleep to stay out of the cold. They will be allowed to shower, do laundry and have a hot meal in the evening with food also provided at breakfast.

Major Randall Summit tells WAND News getting people out of the cold with incoming cold temperatures can be a matter of life and death.

Men at the shelter can remain day and night until the weather improves.
