SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A teenager who was arrested on charges of stabbing his mother to death has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

On June 29, 2024, Springfield police found 51-year-old Misty Long with multiple stab wounds at a home in the 3000 block of Shadowfax Drive. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Her son—who was 16 at the time—was arrested on charges including first degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, and unlawful use of a weapon. He was taken to a juvenile detention facility.

The teen was recently acquitted of first degree murder and aggravated battery by reason of insanity.

The Department of Human Services will prepare an evaluation within 30 days.

A hearing will be held on March 6 to determine further treatment.
