DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - Vermilion County removed a sheriff candidate from consideration after he failed to complete a required training course.

The Vermilion County Clerk's Office posted to Facebook Tuesday that Hugh Sands is barred from running for the Office of Sheriff after not completing the required course, "Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Officers Training Course."

County officials held a hearing Monday morning to discuss Sands following an objection to his candidacy.

After reviewing evidence, the Vermilion County Electoral Board went ahead with the objection and removed Sands from the ballot.

The Illinois State Police has a 640-hour basic training course to prepare local law enforcement trainees on criminal offenses in the state, control and arrest tactics, law enforcement driving, taser certification and more.
