DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Back to school season is in full swing and that means more kids are out walking, biking, and loading into school busses. As kids learn their routes to school, it's important to stay extra cautious, and remember school safety laws.Â
"A lot of people are really busy in the morning trying to get to work, but the kids are trying to get to school as well," said Sergeant Roger Pope Jr. with the Macon County Sheriff's Office. "Unfortunately, not everyone takes off in time and that can result in bad things like having pedestrian crashes all the time, whether it be kids on bicycles or kids walking, it's not uncommon to hear that."Â
Sgt. Pope Jr. says crashes in school zones tend to happen because of speeding or phone usage. Especially while kids get comfortable learning when and where to cross the road, its important to be extra vigilant in school zones. This also applies to student drivers, who are driving to and from school without a lot of experience.Â
"A lot of time we don't give people the space they need to be able to drive and we are in our own little world, up people's tails," said Sgt. Pope Jr. "Just relax, keep your distance, and keep speeds down."Â
While all school zone violations carry penalties, failing to stop for a school bus is especially dangerous. If you don't stop when the attached stop sign is out, your driver's license will be suspended for three months. This is to protect kids leaving the bus to go to school or crossing the street to get home.Â
Sgt. Pope recommends creating clear plans with your students about after school plans is crucial for making sure they make it home safe. This will prevent panic if they decide to hang out with a friend or go somewhere after school, and aren't where you would expect them to be.Â
