DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – Large numbers of charter buses are bringing passengers into Decatur for the 2025 Farm Progress Show. Once passengers get off those buses, the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation will give those vehicles top-to-bottom inspections.
“This is our biggest [event] every two years,” ISP Master Sgt. Todd Armstrong told WAND News. “A chance for all of our certified motor coach inspectors to come out and do inspections.”
The inspections at Farm Progress date back 20 years. They come at a time when thousands of bus crashes are taking place across the nation each year.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, there were 13,452 bus accidents nationwide in 2024 with 171 fatalities.
Illinois ranked fourth in the nation with the most bus accidents in 2024 behind only Texas, Florida and New York. The inspections will resume in Decatur Wednesday.
