SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — People will soon be able to enjoy liquor inside an iconic building in downtown Springfield.
A new state law has allowed Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs to have liquor delivered, sold, and dispensed at his office in the former Marine Bank Building across from the Old State Capitol.
Rep. Liza Hernandez (D-Cicero) said the building is an optimal space for hosting receptions due to the large first floor atrium and historic significance as Abraham Lincoln's bank.
Lawmakers told WAND News that the building is an optimal space for hosting receptions due to the large first floor atrium and historic significance as Abraham Lincoln's bank.
"This legislation would ensure clear authority consistent with other similar state facilities to serve or distribute liquor during such events," said Rep. Lisa Hernandez (D-Cicero).
Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) was the lead sponsor of this plan in her chamber. The legislation gained strong bipartisan support in both chambers and the new law took effect Friday.
