EMMITSBURG, Md. (WAND) — A local hero will be among those honored at the 43rd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in Emmitsburg, Maryland this weekend.

Fire Chief Larry Peasley is one of seven Illinois firefighters who will be remembered at the event hosted by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Chief Peasley served the Maroa community for over 40 years. Last year, his son JD Peasley, told WAND News that his dad grew up in Lincoln, but met his soon-to-be bride from Maroa and has been a part of the community ever since.

On Dec. 7, 2022, Chief Peasley collapsed before heading out to a mutual aid call to assist the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. He was taken to the hospital where he remained until his passing on Jan. 4, 2023.

“National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend is a time for our nation to pause and reflect on the heroic efforts and selfless service of the fallen firefighters we are paying tribute to this year,” said NFFF CEO Victor Stagnaro. “We will always remember the bravery, commitment, and sacrifices of each of these 226 heroes—and their families.”

Fire service and government leaders are scheduled to address the thousands of attendees at the Memorial Service on Sunday, May 5 at 9:00 a.m. CST.
