Motorcyclist killed in crash with semi on I-74 near Urbana identified

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - A motorcyclist was killed and another was injured after crashing with a semi truck on Interstate 74 eastbound near Urbana. 

According to the Champaign County Coroner, Hector Santiago-Cardona, 35, of Champaign was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital. 

An autopsy for Santiago-Cardona has been scheduled. The circumstances surrounding this crash is being investigated by Urbana Police 

Department, Illinois State Police, and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.

According to Urbana police, officers were called to Cunningham Ave. near the on-ramp to east I-74 at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday. 

UPD said a semi driver was making a left turn when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic and hit two motorcyclists who were going north on Cunningham Ave. 

Santiago-Cardona was taken to the hospital where he later died, and a second motorcyclist was treated for minor injuries. 

The driver of the semi, 37-year-old Hugo Bautista-Perez, was cited for failure to yield the right of way while turning.
